Congregation Beth Israel

Keeping Jewish traditions alive in San Angelo to share with all who are interested.

About us

Congregation Beth Israel is a small, unaffiliated synagogue that serves the Concho Valley. Founded in 1928, we are one of the oldest Jewish congregations in Texas; however, the Jewish congregation of San Angelo dates back to the late 1800s. In the early twentieth century, Jewish businesses throughout San Angelo helped our city and community thrive.

Our Mission: Beth Israel is a small, dynamic congregation committed to cultivating a love and understanding of the Jewish heritage, stimulating fellowship, and fostering spiritual and educational growth of our members within a warm and supportive Jewish community.

More About Us: San Angelo is blessed to have a wonderful diversity of faith, and we are the only traditional Jewish congregation in the Concho Valley. We are proud to offer our community a welcoming synagogue, offering services, tours, and holiday celebrations open to all, with the request that people of different faiths to be respectful of ours.

You Are Welcome Here!

It is truly my honor to serve as president and lay leader of Congregation Beth Israel. When I moved to San Angelo in 1998, I was welcomed by matriarchs and patriarchs of our congregation - The Polunsky’s, the Rays, the Kleinmans, the Finns, and the Meltzers (from Brady). I will always remember them welcoming me and my family - especially my young children, who were 2 years and 6 months old at the time. The older congregants loved having children in the synagogue, and, while I was mortified that they would be walking between the pews or standing in front of the bima during the service, they would tell me over and over again how happy they were to have us there. I have never forgotten their kindness, and I hope to make current and new families of our congregation feel just as welcome!
